Ein kleiner aber feiner 3D-Animationsfilm macht derzeit die Runde im Web. Big Buck Bunny heißt der Streifen. Das besondere daran, der Film wurde fast ausschließlich mittels freier Software erstellt.
Für das digitale Rendering haben die Filmemacher die On-Demand-Grid-Infrastruktur Sun Network.com und das Open Source Rendering-Programm "Blender" genutzt. Daneben kamen Linux, Gimp und Inkscape zum Einsatz.
Big Buck Bunny steht unter einer Open License. Wer möchte, kann also auf die Studio-Datenbank zugreifen. Bei Bedarf kann man sich den Film auch auf DVD kaufen. Mit dem Erlös soll der nächste Open Movie finanziert werden.
